Thrupe Lane Swallett

You'll find this cave tucked away on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills, just outside Wells. Thrupe Lane Swallett is a proper caver's spot - a natural underground passage that floods seasonally and demands respect. The entrance is modest, almost easy to miss if you're not paying attention, but once you're in, it becomes clear why locals know about it.

This isn't a commercial show cave with electric lights and handrails. It's raw limestone passage work - the kind of thing that appeals to walkers with a geological bent and anyone curious about how water shapes these hills. You're looking at underground streams, formations, and the sort of narrow passages that make you think carefully about whether you've got the headlamp and the nerve for it. Flash flooding is a genuine risk here, so checking conditions and water levels before you go isn't optional.

Wells is the obvious base - it's genuinely worth a day or two on its own, with the cathedral and market town atmosphere. If caving's your thing, this fits well with other Mendip attractions. Allow an afternoon, bring proper kit, and don't go alone.
