Wells Cathedral

The west front stops you dead. Those towers, the intricate stonework, the sheer vertical ambition of it all - it's the kind of medieval architecture that makes you understand why people spent decades building cathedrals instead of, you know, doing anything sensible. Wells Cathedral, sitting right in the market town of Wells, is one of England's finest and absolutely justifies the trip if you're anywhere near Somerset.

Inside, the fan vaulting is extraordinary, and the medieval clock mechanism still works - it's been ticking away since 1392, which is frankly mental. The cloisters are calm in a way that modern life rarely permits. You can spend two hours here properly, or dash through in forty minutes if time's tight. The nearby palace gardens add another hour if you've got the legs for it.

This isn't a theme park experience. There's no queue, no gift shop nonsense, just deeply impressive medieval craftsmanship. Families with restless kids under ten might struggle - there's a lot of standing about - but teenagers who've been dragged around enough castles to care about architecture will find it genuinely absorbing. History enthusiasts will spend half a day here and still want longer.

Wells itself is tiny and walkable. If you're based at Cathedral View Glamping or Wells Touring Park, you're minutes away. The cathedral does charge admission, though it's reasonable. Check the website for current opening hours and prices before you go. Pair it with Cheddar Gorge if you're making a proper Somerset loop - they're only forty minutes apart.
