Threat Rigg

The walk up Threat Rigg rewards you with views that make the effort genuinely worthwhile. It's a proper fell, not a gentle stroll - expect steep sections and proper climbing if you're coming from Penrith direction, but the summit opens up across the Lake District fells in a way that catches most visitors off guard.

You're looking at a couple of hours round trip from the base, depending on your fitness and which route you fancy. The peak itself isn't dramatic - no jagged rocks or exposure to worry about - but the perspective it gives you of the surrounding landscape is exactly why people come to this corner of Cumbria. Clear days are essential; in mist it's just moorland trudging.

Walkers will get proper value here. Families with decent hill legs should manage it fine, though younger children might find the push to the top tedious. History enthusiasts won't find anything particularly special - it's the views that do the talking.

Based near Penrith, you're well placed to tackle this alongside other fell walks. If you're stopping at Wild Rose Holiday Park or Howdy Glamping, Threat Rigg makes a solid half-day outing. The glamping site especially suits people wanting a bit more comfort after a proper day on the hills.

There's no visitor infrastructure on the fell itself - go prepared with water and decent boots. Best tackled when the weather's playing ball; autumn gives you the clearest air and the least crowds.
