Thorpeness Heritage Hut

A small corrugated iron hut that tells the story of Thorpeness, the Edwardian seaside village that grew up around it. Inside you'll find photographs, artefacts and local memorabilia documenting how this chunk of the Suffolk coast transformed from farmland into a planned resort in the early 1900s. It's the kind of place where five minutes can stretch into twenty if you get chatting to whoever's running it that day.

History enthusiasts will find it genuinely interesting - there's proper detail about the vision behind Thorpeness and how it actually came together. Kids might find it a bit thin on the ground for entertainment value, though if they're the type to read old photographs and ask questions, they'll learn something. Most casual visitors spend 30 minutes here, tops.

It's free or costs a few quid - records aren't clear - and sits right in Thorpeness village itself, near Leiston. The real draw is combining it with a walk around the village's lakes and that distinctive water tower, then heading to the beach. If you're staying at Beach View Holiday Park, it's barely two miles away, so worth squeezing in on a rainy afternoon. Less essential if you're based further out at Boundary Farm Glamping, though the drive's only ten minutes or so.

Go off-season if you can. Summer weekends turn Thorpeness into a bit of a scrum, and the hut gets rammed with school groups.
