Thorpe Wood

Thorpe Wood sprawls across 200 acres just east of Peterborough, a proper working forest that feels properly removed from the city despite being so close. You're walking beneath mature oak and pine, with enough space to actually breathe - it's not some manicured nature reserve with interpretation boards at every turn. The woodland paths are straightforward to follow, ranging from gentle loops to longer treks that take you deeper into the quieter sections where you'll genuinely lose sight of the car park.

It works best for families with older kids and serious walkers rather than toddlers. There's no playground or café, so come prepared. The beauty here is the woodland itself - the kind of place where you can actually spot deer if you keep your eyes open, especially early morning. Allow two to three hours for a decent walk, longer if you're the type to linger and absorb.

Free to access and open year-round, though autumn and spring are when you'll see the woodland at its best. It sits on the doorstep of Ferry Meadows Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, barely half a mile away, making it genuinely convenient if you're based there. Even from Nene Outdoors Campsite at just under a mile, it's an easy morning or evening stroll. The Nest Glamping over at five miles would require a short drive, but still puts you well within reach for a half-day forest walk. Pair it with the nearby Nene Valley and you've got a solid woodland break sorted.
