Thornton Moor Reservoir

The water is remarkably still on the mornings I've been out there - flat as glass, reflecting the moors that rise up around it. Thornton Moor Reservoir sits just outside Keighley, a proper working water supply that's somehow managed to stay accessible to walkers and anyone wanting a bit of air without the Peak District crowds.

It's straightforward: you walk the perimeter, taking in open moorland views and the occasional glint of water through the bracken. The path is manageable, nothing technical, though it can be muddy after rain. The whole circuit takes a couple of hours depending on your pace and how many times you stop to look around.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young kids might find it a touch samey after the first mile - it's moorland, water, and sky, not theme-park entertainment. But if you've got older children who can manage a decent hike, or you're after somewhere to clear your head without traveling far from town, it works.

Timing-wise, early morning or late afternoon beats midday. The light's better, and you'll likely have the place mostly to yourself. Access appears free, though I'd check locally before heading out - these reservoirs can be fussy about their rules.
