Thornley Wood

The woodland around Thornley doesn't announce itself loudly. You drive through Stanley and suddenly there's this proper pocket of green - mature trees, quiet paths, the kind of place where you actually hear birds rather than traffic. It's a nature reserve, though the signage could be clearer, so don't expect manicured trails or visitor facilities.

What you get instead is genuine woodland walking. The paths wind through mixed deciduous forest, and in spring it's carpeted with bluebells. Summer brings dappled shade that feels brilliant after a day in Stanley itself. The undergrowth is thick enough that you genuinely feel away from things, even though you're minutes from town.

This is walkers' territory, plain and simple. Families with small kids might find the paths a touch muddy and uneven - bring proper boots. Birdwatchers will have a field day, particularly if you time it for early morning when migrants stop through. History types won't find much here beyond the woodland itself, which is fine - not everything needs a plaque.

Give it an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're keen. It's the sort of place that slots neatly alongside Beamish Holiday Park or Beamish Glamping if you're basing yourself in the area. A decent stretch of legs before heading to the museums at Beamish itself, or honestly, if you just want to breathe somewhere quiet, it works. Free to access, no faffing about with opening times - that's the whole appeal of it.
