Thorndon Country Park South

The woodland sprawls properly thick around Thorndon, with mature oaks and chestnuts creating actual shade - the kind you'll be grateful for on a scorcher. There's a decent network of paths threading through here, nothing too demanding, and you'll spot muntjac deer if you're quiet enough, plus the usual woodland birds. It's a country park rather than a manicured nature reserve, which means it feels like somewhere people have walked for generations rather than somewhere designed for Instagram.

Walkers and dog owners come here constantly, and it's easy to see why. The paths are well-maintained without being sterile, and there's enough woodland to get properly lost in for an afternoon without needing navigation apps. Families with young children will manage the easier routes fine - the going's straightforward and there's space to run about.

Just outside Billericay, it's an easy detour if you're staying at Barleylands Campsite nearby, though frankly you could spend two hours here and that's probably your lot unless you're genuinely keen on woodland ecology. It's not dramatic or surprising, but it's the sort of place that settles your head after a morning of driving.

Free to visit. Allow a solid hour for a proper wander, longer if you've got kids who like poking about in undergrowth. Spring's decent for bluebells, though the usual autumn colours are what draw crowds.
