Thornbury MX

The Severn Estuary sprawls out before you at Thornbury MX, a nature reserve that catches you off guard with how wild it feels given you're barely ten minutes from Wotton-under-Edge. This isn't a manicured visitor experience - it's proper working wetland where you're more likely to spot avocets and curlews than crowds.

The reserve pulls in serious birdwatchers, especially during migration seasons when the mudflats become a feeding station for waders passing through. If ornithology isn't your thing, the walk alone justifies the trip - the paths give you genuine estuary views without the tourist infrastructure of places further south.

Timing matters here. High tide obscures the flats and most of the visual interest; low tide opens up the mudbanks and makes spotting easier. Spring and autumn are peak seasons, though winter can be dramatic if you don't mind the cold. Allow an hour for a decent explore, longer if you're patient with binoculars.
