Thorn Hill

The walk up Thorn Hill isn't long, but it rewards you with proper views across the Marlborough Downs. You're looking at chalk grassland, rolling fields, and on a clear day, sight lines that stretch for miles in every direction. The summit itself is modest - there's no building, no cafe, no facilities whatsoever - just grass, sky, and the sense that you've earned a decent vantage point without breaking a sweat.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's the kind of place you'd tick off as part of a longer ramble through the Wiltshire countryside, rather than a destination in itself. The climb takes maybe twenty minutes from the car park, so allow an hour if you're going to sit about and actually look at the view instead of just photographing it. Families with younger kids might find it a bit anticlimactic - there's nothing to do once you're up there except admire the landscape.

If you're based at one of the local camping spots - Hillview Park, Honey Bee Glamping, or Little Owls Camping are all within a few miles of Marlborough - Thorn Hill works well as a morning walk before you head elsewhere. The nearby market town of Marlborough itself is worth an afternoon, and the Downs are cracking for cycling if you're into that. Go on a weekday if you can. Summer mornings, before the heat builds, are ideal.
