Thomas' Sands

You'll find Thomas' Sands just outside Newry, a stretch of beach that catches most people off guard because it doesn't announce itself loudly. There's nothing fancy about it - just good, honest sand backed by modest dunes and the kind of light you get when you're facing the Irish Sea straight on. It's the sort of place locals know well but tourists often miss entirely.

The beach itself is ideal for a proper walk rather than an intensive seaside session. The sand is firm and extends a fair distance, which means you can cover ground without feeling like you're wading through treacle. On a clear day you get proper views across to the Mourne Mountains - genuinely worth lifting your eyes for. Families with younger children will manage fine here, though don't expect the tourist infrastructure of a main resort beach. There's no lifeguard station or amusement arcades, which is either a relief or a letdown depending on your outlook.

Timing matters more than you'd think. Early morning or late afternoon gives you the light without the chance of crowds, though frankly this isn't the sort of place that gets rammed. If you're staying at Annalong Holiday Park just down the coast, it's practically on your doorstep. Even from Willowtree Glamping, also nearby, it's a short hop for an evening stroll.

Go if you want a genuine local beach experience rather than a polished tourist attraction. Don't go expecting facilities or facilities or expecting to spend six hours there. It's a proper addition to a Mourne area break, not a destination unto itself.
