The Wrekin

The walk up The Wrekin is steep, rewarding, and absolutely worth setting aside an afternoon for when you're staying in the area near Much Wenlock. This Iron Age hill fort sits 1,334 feet above the Shropshire plain, and the views from the top stretch across five counties on a clear day - though honestly, even on a grey one it's rather special. The main path climbs through woodland before opening out onto moorland; it's properly energetic but takes only about forty minutes to the summit if you're reasonably fit. Allow two hours round trip if you want to enjoy the trig point and the ruined ramparts at the top without rushing. There's a car park at the base, and it costs nothing to walk up. Families with confident walkers will get the most from this - younger kids might find the final push a bit steep, and the wind at altitude can be quite bracing. It's free admission and open year-round, though winter muddle on the lower sections is genuinely slippery. If you're camping at Irongorge or Sytche, this is easily done as a half-day excursion. The moorland can be boggy after rain, so proper boots matter.
