The Whinnies

The Whinnies is a modest nature reserve just outside Stanley in Tyne and Wear, the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss. It's essentially a stretch of woodland and grassland with a small stream running through it - nothing flashy, but genuinely pleasant for a quiet walk if you're in the area.

You get proper woodland paths here, the kind where you might spot woodland birds and the occasional deer if you're lucky. In spring the wildflowers are decent, and it's green and restful in summer. The reserve is small enough that you won't spend more than an hour or so walking around, which makes it ideal as a leg-stretcher between other activities rather than a destination in itself.

Families with young children will find it manageable - the paths are straightforward and there's something to keep them interested, though it's not a playground situation. Birdwatchers and nature photographers get more out of it than most. It's the sort of place where you actually see people from the local community, which is refreshing.

If you're staying at Beamish Holiday Park or Beamish Glamping - both within three miles - it's genuinely worth a morning visit to add some green space to your trip without much effort. Pair it with Beamish Museum itself for a proper day out. The reserve is free and open access, though it's worth checking conditions after heavy rain as paths can get boggy. Go early if you want any chance of seeing wildlife.
