The Verne Citadel

Perched high above Weymouth on the Isle of Portland, this Victorian fortress still carries the weight of its military past. Built in the 1860s to guard Portland's naval base, The Verne Citadel cuts an imposing figure against the Dorset skyline with its massive stone walls and strategic positioning.

Walking the perimeter gives you proper panoramic views across Weymouth Bay and the Channel beyond. The fortifications themselves are impressive - thick granite walls that have weathered more than 150 years of coastal storms. History buffs will appreciate the military architecture, though there's not much in the way of interpretation or guided tours.

Families staying at nearby parks like Chesil Beach Lodge Park or the various Weymouth sites will find it makes for a decent afternoon's exploration, especially if you're already heading to Portland. The walk up from town is quite steep, so driving is the sensible option. Kids might lose interest after an hour unless they're keen on scrambling over old fortifications.

It's free to wander the exterior areas, though access can be limited depending on what's happening with the current prison facility housed within part of the complex. Best combined with a trip to Portland Bill lighthouse or Chesil Beach rather than making it your main destination.
