The Usher Gallery

Lincoln's art gallery sits right in the city centre, and it's a proper little gem if you want to spend a couple of hours out of the Lincolnshire wind. The Usher Gallery holds a solid collection of paintings, decorative arts and sculpture - nothing that'll blow your mind, but genuinely good work displayed without pretension across manageable galleries.

You get local history alongside national names, which works well. The building itself has character. It's free to get in, which removes any pressure to stay longer than you fancy, though most people spend a decent 90 minutes here without boredom. Kids generally find it more interesting than your average regional gallery because the collections aren't fusty - there's actual colour and variety.

Lincoln's a good base for park holidays in the area. Hartsholme Country Park campsite sits just 2.3 miles south and gives you proper access to the cathedral, castle and these galleries without needing to drive everywhere. South Cliff Caravan Site is slightly further out but still walkable to town. If you're camping at Hanworth or Langdale Lakes, you're looking at 5-plus miles, so you'll want transport.

Go midweek morning if you can - Saturday afternoons draw actual crowds. The gallery works best paired with Lincoln's cathedral and castle visit rather than as a standalone trip. Plan two hours maximum. Combine it with a walk along the High Street and you've got a proper morning sorted before heading back to the caravan for lunch.
