The Twins

Two distinctive peaks rising from moorland near Ayrshire, The Twins are a proper little challenge if you're after a Scottish hill walk that doesn't demand mountaineering skills. The twin summits themselves aren't particularly high - you're talking Lowland territory rather than Cairngorm drama - but they punch above their weight in terms of views across Renfrewshire.

The walk up takes a couple of hours depending on your pace and fitness. It's moorland terrain, which means bog and bracken and the occasional squelchy underfoot moment, so proper boots are non-negotiable. Once you're up there though, on a clear day you get that satisfying vista across the Scottish Lowlands - worth the muddy shins, honestly.

This appeals most to walkers after a half-day outing and families with teenagers who can handle a moderate hike. If you're after an easy stroll, this isn't it. The Pods at Auchenhean, just 5.5 miles away, makes an excellent base - a proper gem for a park holiday in the area, and you could knock this walk out before lunch and still have the afternoon free.

Go when the weather's stable. Coming up in the wet is grim, and visibility turns it from scenic to pointless pretty quickly. October through to April gets dramatic skies but harsh wind; summer's typically safer, if busier. There's no visitor infrastructure at The Twins themselves - no facilities, no car park attendant - so plan accordingly. It's one of those proper Scottish experiences where you're self-sufficient and the landscape does the talking.
