The grounds around Eglinton Castle are genuinely worth a wander if you're staying in the area - it's one of those places that unfolds as you explore rather than hitting you with everything at once. You're walking through proper woodland and open parkland where red squirrels actually exist, which beats staring at a map any day. The castle itself is a ruin, but the setting's atmospheric enough that you won't feel cheated.

Historically minded visitors will spend a good hour poking around the remnants and reading up on the place. Families with young kids get something different - the space to run about, a burn to paddle in if the weather's decent, and enough trees to feel like an adventure without actually needing to navigate anything tricky. Dog walkers absolutely love it here. There's parking on site and the whole thing won't cost you a penny.
