About The Torr
The summit itself is bare rock and heather, nothing fancy, but that's rather the point. You get up there and you can see right across to the mainland - the Ayrshire coast stretches out, and on clear days you're looking at a fair chunk of southern Scotland. The walk takes most people under two hours from the trailhead near Lochranza, and it's steep enough to feel like an achievement without requiring proper climbing gear.
This works brilliantly for families with older kids and walkers who want something more than a flat stroll but don't fancy a full day expedition. Younger children might struggle with the gradient, but teenagers will get a kick out of it. The route's straightforward enough - no scrambling required - though the path can be muddy after rain, so decent boots matter.
If you're staying at Kings Caves Glamping just down the road, The Torr makes an excellent half-day outing. It pairs well with exploring Lochranza itself - the castle ruins are just there - or combining it with other Arran walks if you've got the legs for it. Summer's nicest obviously, but even winter brings walkers when the weather holds.
