The Strand

The Strand is a seafront promenade that runs along Dawlish's shoreline, backed by those distinctive red sandstone cliffs the town's famous for. It's less a single attraction and more a place to simply be - a proper seaside walk where you can stretch your legs, grab fish and chips, and watch the trains rattle along the track that runs right between the beach and the town proper. The beach itself is grey sand and shingle, backed by a seawall that's been protecting this stretch of Devon coast for well over a century.

It works best for families wanting a gentle potter rather than a full day's expedition. Toddlers can manage the flat promenade easily. Older kids get a kick out of spotting the trains. Adults tend to linger over coffee while watching the waves - it's that kind of place. If you're staying at Haven Devon Cliffs or Haven - Devon Cliffs Resort just up the road, this is practically on your doorstep, though the cliffs themselves are the real draw if you fancy a walk with a view.

There's no entry fee - you simply show up and wander. Allow an hour or so for a leisurely stroll, longer if you sit down. Low tide reveals more beach and makes for better walking. Winter's quieter, summer gets rammed with holiday crowds. It's a solid anchor point for a seaside day rather than a destination in itself, but that's rather the point of Dawlish.
