The Springs

You won't find the Springs on every postcard, but locals near Stevenage swear by it. It's a proper woodland walk through beech and oak, where a series of natural springs bubble up from chalky ground and feed into clear pools. The water's cold enough to make you gasp if you're daft enough to paddle, but on a hot summer's day that's exactly the point.

The walk itself is gentle - nothing that'll knacker the legs or demand proper hiking boots. You're looking at maybe forty minutes to loop through, depending on how often you stop to listen to the water and watch for woodland birds. Kids tend to get a kick out of spotting the springs themselves, and there's enough of a path that buggies work fine if you're flexible about muddy patches.

Walkers and naturalists get the most from this one. It's the kind of place where you notice things - moss on north-facing trees, the way the light filters through in late afternoon, the smell after rain. Photography types will find decent shots of the water catching light, though you won't get those dramatic landscape vistas.

Free to access, open whenever. Best visited in spring when the water flow is strongest, or autumn when the beech turns gold. If you're camped at Church Farm Ardeley just down the road, this makes a cracking half-day outing without needing to pile everyone in the car. Not a destination on its own, but absolutely worth the short drive from Stevenage if you're already in the area.
