The Spinney

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured tourist trap, The Spinney sits just outside Henlow and delivers exactly what it promises - quiet forest, birdsong, and space to breathe. It's the kind of place where you can actually think, which sounds daft until you realise how rare that's become.

The woodland itself is modest in scale but dense enough that you feel genuinely away from things. Paths wind through mixed trees, and it's genuinely good for spotting woodland birds if you're into that sort of thing. There's nothing flashy - no viewing platforms or gift shops - just trees, earth, and the occasional glimpse of clearings. You'll want sturdy shoes after rain; it gets boggy in patches.

For woodland walks and nature types, it's brilliant. Families with younger kids might find an hour the limit unless they're the sort who enjoy spotting wildlife. Older children who can manage uneven ground will get more from it. Dog walkers absolutely love it - proper off-lead country without the tourist crowds you get at bigger parks.

If you're camped at Henlow Bridge Lakes or Radwell Lake - both solid bases for the area - this makes an excellent morning or late afternoon outing. The drive from either site takes barely ten minutes. Go early to avoid any afternoon foot traffic, and bring weather-appropriate kit. It's free, which is brilliant, and you can spend as little as forty minutes or a full couple of hours depending on your pace. No facilities on-site, so sort yourself out beforehand.
