The Socach

The Socach rises to 3,006 feet just west of Ballater, and it's one of those Scottish hills that rewards you without demanding your entire day. The walk from Glen Callater takes around four hours return, climbing through heather and sparse woodland before opening out onto moorland with serious views back towards Lochnagar.

This isn't a technical scramble - boots and reasonable fitness will get you there - but the exposure on the final push commands respect. The summit cairn sits stark against the sky, with the Dee Valley splayed out below like a map. On a clear day you'll see right across Aberdeenshire toward the coast.

Walkers serious about their Cairngorms will absolutely get their money's worth here. It's less crowded than its famous neighbours, which means you'll likely have the top to yourself. Families with older kids (12+, decent hill legs) could manage it, though the moorland section drags a bit for younger ones who want instant gratification.

Go in summer for the long daylight and better ground conditions; winter here turns nasty fast. The walk is free, obviously - you're just parking near Glen Callater and heading out. Allow a full morning or early afternoon.
