The Slab

The Slab is a stretch of exposed rock platform that runs along the Gower Peninsula's coastline near Burry Port, and it's exactly what the name suggests - a massive, flat expanse of limestone that juts into the sea. At low tide, the whole thing becomes a proper geological playground where you can pick your way across tide pools, peer into rock crevices teeming with starfish and anemones, and generally feel like you've stumbled onto another planet.

It's a brilliant spot for families with older kids and anyone who likes poking about in rock pools without the twee fairground atmosphere of most beach attractions. Expect to spend one to three hours here depending on how seriously you get into the marine life. The actual access is free, and there's no official visitor centre or admission fee - just turn up at low tide, wear decent shoes, and bring a bucket if you're keen.

Timing matters. You absolutely must hit it near low tide or you'll find yourself clambering over wet rocks with nowhere to stand. Check tide tables before you go, and allow yourself at least three hours from parking to leaving. The nearby caravan parks - Pembrey Country Park and Shoreline - make decent bases if you're planning a proper Gower peninsula trip, though neither will win awards for character. The Slab works best as part of a wider coastal walk rather than a standalone destination, but if you've got geology enthusiasts in your group or kids who can't resist turning over rocks, it's absolutely worth the drive from Burry Port.
