The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham (Anglican)

The Anglican shrine sits in the village of Walsingham, just outside Fakenham, and it's one of those places that catches you off guard with its sheer intensity of faith. You walk into the grounds expecting something modest, and instead find yourself in a pocket of extraordinary devotion - pilgrims kneeling in prayer, candles burning by the dozen, the air thick with incense and sincerity.

It's a working pilgrimage site, not a museum piece. The shrine itself is focused on a modern chapel housing a replica of the Holy House - the original medieval shrine was destroyed in 1538, and this Anglican version rebuilt the tradition in the 1930s. You can light a candle, sit in the chapel, walk the grounds. It's free to enter, though donations are expected and merch (candles, prayer cards, postcards) will lighten your wallet if you're inclined.

History buffs will spend a good hour here, particularly if they read up on the medieval pilgrimage trade beforehand - Walsingham was once as big a draw as Canterbury. Most visitors allow 45 minutes to an hour. The village itself is quiet and walkable. You're about five miles from several caravan parks - Pinewoods and Norfolk Coast Caravans are both close enough for a morning visit. Combine it with a wander round the High Street charity shops or a trip to nearby coast. It's not flashy, but it's real.
