The Savill Garden

The Savill Garden sits within Windsor Great Park, and it's one of those places that genuinely rewards a half-day visit rather than a quick dash through. Twenty acres of immaculately planted borders, woodland glades, and water features - the sort of gardens that make you walk slower than you intended and forget what time it is.

You'll find rhododendrons and azaleas doing their thing in spring, herbaceous borders absolutely rammed with colour come summer, and proper autumn gold in the trees. There's a lovely valley garden section with a stream running through it, and the way they've managed the woodland planting means you're not just looking at flowers - you're walking through different rooms of carefully planned landscape. It takes about two hours to do it properly without rushing.

This is best suited to keen gardeners and anyone who appreciates thoughtful horticulture. Parents with young kids might find it less gripping - there's walking involved and not much in the way of interactive activity beyond the usual park wandering. History buffs will appreciate that the garden's been here since the 1930s, built within the bones of a royal hunting ground.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks within striking distance - Warfield Park and the Chertsey sites are all within five miles - the Savill makes a cracking half-day outing between longer Windsor Great Park exploration. Windsor town itself is close by for lunch and tea stops. Check current opening hours and admission charges before heading out, as these can shift seasonally.
