The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary sits on the chalky heights above Marlborough, a Bronze Age settlement that's genuinely atmospheric if you know what you're looking at. What remains are the low banks and ditches where concentric circles once stood - not dramatic like Stonehenge, but far less crowded and honestly more affecting if archaeology interests you at all.

You're walking through what was essentially a ceremonial space around 2500 years ago, with the downs rolling out in all directions. The site itself is modest - no visitor centre, no interpretive panels - which means you either come prepared with a guidebook or use your imagination. That's either brilliant or frustrating depending on your mood.

Historians and Bronze Age enthusiasts will find it worthwhile. Families with young kids might struggle unless they're already keen on ancient monuments - there's no drama here, just landscape and archaeology. Allow an hour including the walk up from the nearby car park, longer if you're photographing or sitting about.

It's free to access and works well as part of a wider Wiltshire trip. If you're camping at Ridgeway Campsite or Hillview Park, it's genuinely close - walkable from some of the nearer pitches. The Marlborough Downs are brilliant for rambling anyway, so pair it with a proper circular walk rather than treating it as a standalone stop. Go on a clear day when the views justify the effort.
