The Royal Cinema

Faversham's Royal Cinema is one of those proper old-school picture houses that actually still works as a cinema - no converted-into-flats nonsense here. The building itself is the real draw: a genuine Victorian theatre with the bones of something grand, the kind of place where you can almost hear the crackle of decades of film reels and audience chatter.

Inside, it's intimate rather than cavernous. You're watching films in a space that's been doing exactly this job since the 1800s, which beats multiplex sterility any day. The screen's not enormous, but that's rather the point - there's character in the slight imperfections.

It works brilliantly if you're staying at any of the nearby camping spots - Painters Farm is closest at just over two miles, or Seasalter Holiday Park at four miles - and want an actual evening out that isn't a chain restaurant. Takes an evening, obviously, depending what's on. Check their listings before you book accommodation, mind, as programming can be patchy.

Families with older kids who'll sit still will find it atmospheric. Little ones? They'll fidget. History buffs and theatre enthusiasts should absolutely make the pilgrimage to Faversham anyway - the whole town's got enough charm to justify a day trip, and the cinema caps it off nicely.
