The Round Hill

Standing at 1,673 feet, this proper little peak offers some of the best panoramic views in North Staffordshire without the crowds you'll find at more famous summits. The climb from any direction is manageable - steep enough to feel like you've earned the view but not so brutal that you'll need crampons.

From the top, you can see right across the Staffordshire moorlands on a clear day, with the Roaches visible to the northeast and the urban sprawl of Stoke-on-Trent spread out below. It's particularly lovely at sunset when the city lights start twinkling.

Walkers and families with older children will get the most from this one. The paths can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, depending on your chosen route.

Keen photographers shouldn't miss the winter months when frost turns the moorland grasses silver. Just wrap up warm - it's properly exposed up there when the wind gets up.

If you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Hales Hall or Intake Farm, this makes a cracking morning walk before the day gets too hot. The Star site near Alton is particularly well-placed for tackling several peaks in the area during a longer stay.
