The Rookery

The Rookery is a proper woodland escape on the edge of Daventry, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a managed forest with decent walking trails threading through mature trees - nothing too demanding, but enough to feel like you've actually been somewhere rather than just wandered round a local park.

The appeal here is straightforward: trees, quiet, and space to breathe. Families with younger kids will find it manageable - the paths are clear enough and there's room to let them run about without constant supervision. If you're into birds, bring binoculars; the name gives it away, really. History types won't find much here architecturally, but the woodland itself has probably been managed for centuries, which counts for something.

Allow a solid hour to two hours depending on how many trails you fancy and whether you stop to actually look at things. It's free to wander, which is always welcome. Spring's best if you want wildflowers and birdsong; autumn if you prefer fewer people and decent light through the canopy.

From the nearby glamping spots - EWE and Steepleton Lodge are both within a couple of miles - The Rookery works as a morning outing before heading into Daventry town itself, or a post-lunch potter if the weather's turned. Don't expect dramatic vistas or Instagram moments. Go if you want a genuine woodland walk without the crowds of more famous spots. Skip it if you need facilities, cafes, or anything beyond trees and footpaths.
