The Plantation

The Plantation is a proper woodland walk just outside Banbury, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a managed forest rather than a grand country estate, so come expecting coppiced woodland and forestry trails rather than manicured gardens or visitor facilities.

What you get is straightforward: tree-lined paths that meander through native and planted woodland, ideal for clearing your head on a grey Oxfordshire afternoon. The trails vary in difficulty, so families with younger kids won't struggle with the flatter sections, though there are steeper stretches if you fancy a bit of effort. It's not the sort of place you'll spend all day - an hour to ninety minutes does it nicely - but it slots perfectly into a longer park holiday around Banbury.

Stay at one of the nearby campsites (Crofts Barn is barely a mile away) and you can do The Plantation as a morning walk before heading elsewhere. Spring is genuinely lovely if the bluebells show up, and autumn when the light filters through properly. Winter's fine too if you don't mind damp undergrowth.

Worth knowing: there's no obvious visitor centre or café, so bring water and don't expect signposting at every turn. It's free to access, though facilities are minimal. Real woodland types and walkers wanting to build fitness will get more from it than those wanting a scenic stroll with benches and ice cream. Not fancy, but honest and accessible.
