The Pinewood

The Pinewood sits just outside Harrogate and is a proper woodland walk if you need to stretch your legs between cake stops in town. It's not huge - you're looking at maybe 45 minutes to an hour for a decent loop through the trees - but it's the kind of place where you actually feel like you've left the suburbs behind, even though you haven't gone far.

The reserve itself is straightforward: woodland paths, some conifers, the occasional clearing where light breaks through. Nothing dramatic, but that's rather the point. If you're staying at Windmill Retreats nearby and the weather's fine, it's worth an afternoon visit. Families with younger kids will manage it fine, and it's easy enough that you're not fighting anyone over pace.

Birds are the main draw here if you're into that sort of thing - bring binoculars and patience. The paths can get muddy after rain, so proper boots aren't optional. There's no café or facilities that I'm aware of, so grab a coffee in Harrogate first.

Is it a reason to plan your whole holiday around? No. But if you're based at Windmill or doing the rounds of Harrogate's parks and gardens, it's a worthwhile break from the manicured lawns. It's real woodland rather than landscaped parkland, which some people prefer and others find a bit underwhelming. Worth the detour if you're within a couple of miles. Beyond that, probably not.
