The Folly (Doric columns)

You'll spot this one from a distance - a rather grand statement in the Yorkshire landscape made entirely of Doric columns. The Folly, as it's rather cheekily named, is a gallery space housed within what amounts to a classical temple without walls, which is either brilliant or entirely daft depending on your point of view. I'm firmly in the brilliant camp.

It's an unusual setup. The columns frame exhibitions that rotate throughout the year, so what you see depends on when you visit. The openness of the structure means you're viewing art against the natural backdrop of North Yorkshire, which sounds precious but actually works. There's something about standing under those columns with nothing but sky above that makes you think differently about whatever's on display.

This isn't somewhere you'll spend hours unless you're genuinely into contemporary art. Half an hour, maybe forty-five minutes if you're thorough. The real appeal is how odd and wonderful it is - you've got a proper classical folly doing modern gallery work, which is the kind of contradiction that makes Yorkshire interesting.

For a caravan holiday based at Harrogate Caravan Park or Rudding Holiday Park, it's a solid afternoon detour. Not worth planning your entire trip around, but absolutely worth the short drive from Harrogate if you're after something that isn't another stately home tour. Kids might find it baffling rather than gripping, but architecture enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates a bit of eccentric vision will get a kick from it.
