The Piece Hall

A vast colonnaded courtyard surrounded by Georgian arcades - that's the Piece Hall in Halifax, just outside Elland. Built in 1779, it's where cloth merchants once traded their wares, and the scale of the place still impresses. You can wander the covered walkways, pop into independent shops and cafes, or simply sit on a bench and soak up the architecture. The ground floor has kept its trading heritage alive with local vendors and galleries; upstairs tells the story of the building itself.

It's genuinely free to explore, and there's no time pressure - some people spend twenty minutes, others a couple of hours. Families find it useful as a spot to let kids run around the open courtyard while you grab coffee. History buffs will appreciate the restoration work and the glimpses into Yorkshire's cloth industry. The main drawback? The weather. On a grey Pennine day, it can feel a bit austere. Pick decent light and it transforms.

It makes for a decent half-day outing before heading to nearby Hebden Bridge or tackling the walks around Calderdale. During summer weekends there are often food festivals or live music, which lifts the atmosphere considerably. Worth combining with a proper explore of Halifax's town centre if you've got time.
