The Paper Trail - The Paper Mill Museum

The Paper Mill Museum sits beside the River Gade just outside Hemel Hempstead, housed in what was once a proper working paper mill. You wander through Victorian machinery and learn how paper was actually made before factories got boring - water wheels, pulping equipment, the lot. It's hands-on in the way old industrial museums should be, with staff who genuinely know their stuff and aren't afraid to let you touch things.

The appeal depends on what you're after. Kids under ten will get a solid hour out of it, maybe ninety minutes if they're the type to ask questions. History enthusiasts and anyone interested in how things were made will find it absorbing. Adults who prefer a quick gallery shuffle might feel it drags. The setting's lovely though - you can easily combine it with a walk along the river.

Best visited on a quieter weekday if you can. Weekends draw school groups, which changes the atmosphere entirely. Allow two to three hours if you're not rushing. Check their website for opening hours before you go - they're not always open during standard times.

If you're camping at one of the local farms - Whelpley Hill Park is closest at under four miles, or Highridge Farm if you fancy shepherd huts - this makes a worthwhile half-day addition to your trip. It's not a major draw on its own, but paired with riverside walks and Hemel Hempstead's decent high street, it slots in nicely to a longer weekend.
