The Ox

The Ox is Oxford's contemporary art gallery, tucked away in a corner that most tourists simply walk past on their way to the colleges. It's a working artist space and exhibition venue rolled into one - the sort of place where you might stumble across a sculptor's studio upstairs whilst catching the latest installation downstairs. There's proper energy to it, the kind you only get when a gallery is run by people who actually care about the work rather than just shifting footfall.

You'll spend anything from forty minutes to two hours here depending on what's on and how much you want to chat to whoever's minding the space. Artists are often about, which is the real draw - you get genuine conversations about their work rather than reading a plaque. It changes regularly, so there's reason to visit more than once across a holiday.

The gallery works best for anyone with a serious art interest or those after something less mainstream than the Ashmolean. It's not a family crowd-pleaser with interactive stuff - kids will get bored inside half an hour unless they're genuinely into contemporary work. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Valley Farm Campsite or Oxford Glamping, it's a short drive into central Oxford anyway, so worth adding to an afternoon city visit. Admission and hours aren't always straightforward, so ring ahead before you go. It rewards the effort though - proper Oxford culture without the tourist crush.
