Port Meadow

Water stretches for miles across Port Meadow, and on a clear day you can see right across Oxford to the distant hills. It's essentially a vast, flat meadow on the city's northern edge that floods seasonally, turning into something between a lake and a wetland - unpredictable, sometimes boggy, always atmospheric.

Walkers come here religiously. The towpath runs alongside the meadow and connects to the Thames Path, so you can walk for hours without repeating yourself. On summer weekends families pile in to watch the free-roaming cattle and horses graze. There's a proper wildness to it that feels a world away from the college spires, even though you can see them from the water's edge.

The meadow itself is free to access, though you'll need to use the riverside paths to navigate it safely - especially in winter when it becomes waterlogged. Mornings are best; you'll have the space to yourself and the light's infinitely better for photographs. Allow at least an hour, more if you're walking further along the Thames.

It works brilliantly as a break from central Oxford if you're staying at any of the nearby caravan parks - Valley Farm Campsite is barely two and a half miles away, making it an easy morning walk. Families with older kids will enjoy the freedom of the open space; younger ones might find it bleak and unstructured. The real appeal is the solitude and the sense of stepping outside the tourist trail entirely.
