The Old Lido

The Old Lido sits on the water's edge just outside Doncaster, a proper slice of mid-century leisure frozen in time. It's not operating as a bathing spot anymore, but the bones of what it once was are still there - that art deco grandeur from the 1930s and 40s when these places were the height of summer entertainment. The lake itself is the real draw now: flat, calm water that reflects whatever sky's above it, ringed by mature trees and open grassland. You'll see anglers here regularly, and dog walkers love the flat paths around the perimeter. The setting feels removed from the town despite being so close in.

Historians and photographers will find more to chew on than most. There's something genuinely affecting about seeing these Art Deco structures - the changing pavilions, the vintage structures - without the crowds they were built for. It's melancholic in the best way. Families with younger kids might find twenty minutes enough, though older children interested in local heritage or wanting a straightforward walk around water will get proper value from it.

There's no entrance fee as far as anyone can tell, and you can spend as little as half an hour or use it as part of a longer loop if you're staying at Sunnyview Touring Park nearby. Spring and early summer are best - the water's properly lovely then, and you've got decent light for photographs. Winter's grey but atmospheric. Pair it with a walk into Doncaster itself if you're in the area for a few days.
