Town Moor Golf Course

The fairways at Town Moor stretch across proper golfing territory just outside Doncaster, and it's the sort of course that rewards a straight drive without punishing the occasional wayward shot too harshly. Eighteen holes wind through open parkland with enough water hazards to keep you honest but not so many that you're fishing balls out of ponds every other hole. The greens are well-maintained, the pace of play moves along nicely, and the clubhouse does a decent line in coffee and sandwiches if you've worked up an appetite.

This is a members' course primarily, though visitors can play if you book in advance and ideally have a handicap certificate. The layout suits mid-handicap golfers best - nothing overly tricky, nothing tedious either. You're looking at a good four hours for a round, maybe slightly less if the course isn't rammed. Spring and early autumn tend to be the sweet spot, when the ground's firm and the weather won't turn on you halfway round.

For caravan-based holidays in the area, Town Moor works well alongside a stay at Sunnyview Touring Park, just 3.5 miles away, or the highly-rated Bawtry caravan park a touch further out. It's not a destination course that'll make you drive across three counties, but if golf's on the itinerary during a Doncaster-area break, it's worth ringing ahead and getting a game sorted.
