The Oaks

The Oaks sits just outside Markethill, a proper woodland reserve that punches above its weight if you're after something quieter than the usual tourist circuit. What you get here is ancient oak woodland - the real deal, not a manicured nature trail - with paths that wind through genuinely old trees and a good chance of spotting woodland birds if you time it right.

It's best suited to walkers who don't mind a bit of mud and anyone keen on spotting local wildlife without the crowds. History enthusiasts will appreciate the age of the oaks themselves, some of which have been standing for centuries. Kids get something out of it, though it's not the sort of place that'll hold their attention for hours - an hour or so of exploring works well.

Access appears to be free, and you can wander at your own pace, which is rather the point. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared with good shoes and perhaps a bird guide if that's your thing.

If you're based at Tepee Valley Campsite nearby, you're barely more than twenty minutes away, making it an easy morning outing before heading elsewhere in the Armagh area. The reserve works well as part of a broader exploration of Banbridge and Craigavon's green spaces rather than a destination in itself, but if you're in the mood for honest woodland without the fuss, it delivers.
