The Nower

The Nower sits just outside Westcott as a proper chalk grassland reserve - the sort of place that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards anyone willing to have a proper explore. It's managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust, and the habitat here is genuinely rare. You're walking through downland that would've covered far more of Surrey a century ago, now reduced to scattered pockets like this one.

The paths wind through open grassland dotted with scrub and woodland edges. In spring and early summer it's genuinely worth the trip for wildflowers - orchids, vetches, bird's-foot trefoil everywhere. Butterflies come thick if you time it right. It's not dramatic in the way the South Downs can be, but there's something satisfying about habitat this concentrated and well-managed.

This works best for naturalists and patient walkers rather than families after a quick leg-stretch. Allow an hour minimum to do the reserve justice, longer if you're into botany or insects. It's free to visit and open access, which is good value.
