The Mount

You won't find gift shops or interpretive panels at The Mount near Beccles - just a grassy mound rising abruptly from the Suffolk flatlands with views that stretch for miles in every direction. It's an Iron Age hill fort, though these days it looks more like an overgrown lump in the landscape, which somehow makes it better. The real thrill is working out what you're looking at: the defensive ditches are still visible if you know where to look, and standing on top gives you a sense of why someone chose this spot 2,000 years ago.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination in itself - you're looking at twenty minutes on site if you're thorough - but it makes a proper addition to a ramble around the Beccles area. No admission fee that we could trace, and no facilities to speak of, so bring your own water. Best visited on a clear day when the views justify the climb.

The landscape around here is quietly absorbing rather than dramatic, which suits the understated archaeology. Not for those after a manicured visitor experience, but archaeologists and curious walkers will find it worth the detour.
