The Mayflower Museum

The Mayflower Museum sits right on Plymouth's waterfront, occupying a Tudor building that's got proper character. Inside, you'll find the story of the 1620 voyage laid out through exhibits, artefacts and some genuinely interesting documents - the sort of place where you can stand in front of something an actual passenger would have held.

It's not massive, and that's rather the point. You'll spend forty minutes here if you're casual about it, longer if you're the type to read every panel. The ship's replica moored nearby adds context - seeing it reminds you just how mad the voyage actually was. Families with kids over nine or ten will get something from it; younger children might find the glass cases a bit static.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the detail, though don't expect blockbuster museum production values. It's more intimate than flashy - a museum that trusts its subject matter to do the talking. The waterfront location is the real win; you can easily combine it with a walk around the Hoe or a pint nearby without it feeling like a detour.

If you're staying at Dartmoor Domes just outside the city, this makes a logical wet-weather backup or a half-morning in Plymouth before heading back to the moors. Not a reason to visit Devon on its own, but well worth an hour when you're in the area.
