About The Lizard - Caerthillian National Nature Reserve

The southernmost point of mainland Britain isn't dramatic or touristy - it's just genuinely wild. The Lizard, technically Caerthillian National Nature Reserve, is a sprawl of heath and cliff paths that feels genuinely remote even when you're only forty minutes from Helston. You walk here, mostly. There are proper trails threading through gorse and heather, some inland paths that are almost meditative, others that cling to the cliffs with the sea churning below. The rock itself - green and red serpentine stone - gives the whole place an alien quality, like nowhere else on the Cornish coast.

This is for people who want to move, not spectate. Walkers absolutely thrive here; the paths are straightforward but never boring, and the vegetation changes depending on the season. Families with older kids will get a couple of hours out of it easily. If your children are the "are we there yet" type, though, it might feel like a rather long walk to nowhere in particular. Birdwatchers and botanists come for the rare plants and migrant species, though you need to know what you're looking for.

Admission is free - it's a nature reserve, not a visitor attraction - and there's parking near the lighthouse. Allow at least two hours for a proper wander. It works brilliantly as part of a broader coastal walk or as a quiet afternoon between busier days. Henry's Camp Site is barely half a mile away, making it an easy base for exploring. The Secret Garden Glamping is further afield but still close enough for a day trip. Go when it's clear; mist turns it into somewhere you can barely see ten metres ahead.
