The Lawn, Whittlesford

The Lawn sits just outside Cambridge, a modest nature reserve that punches above its weight for anyone after a proper walk without the crowds. It's essentially a working fen - wet grassland dotted with pools and rough vegetation - the kind of place where you'll actually see something if you keep your eyes open rather than just trudging past manicured flower beds.

The appeal here is straightforward: birds. Lots of them. Bring decent binoculars and a field guide, because you'll spot warblers, snipe, and the odd heron if the timing's right. The walking trails are undemanding, boggy in places, and genuinely quiet. There's no tea room, no gift shop, no one trying to sell you anything. It's the sort of reserve run by locals who actually care about the habitat.

Walkers and birdwatchers will get far more from it than families with small children - the landscape is fairly uniform, and kids tend to get bored when nothing jumps out at them in five minutes. Spring and autumn are when it's worth the trip, when migration brings in less common species.

If you're staying at Pightle Farm Campsite nearby, it's a decent half-day outing to combine with a walk into Cambridge itself - maybe three hours all in. Admission details are hazy, so ring ahead, but it's the sort of place that either has an honesty box or charges a couple of quid. Don't expect facilities. Expect solitude and, if you're lucky, wildlife.
