The Lake

The Lake near Ripon is one of those water features that catches you off guard - you're cycling or driving through the Yorkshire countryside and suddenly there's this proper body of water, gleaming between the trees. It's a working reservoir really, but what matters is that it's accessible, peaceful, and genuinely lovely for a walk.

You can circuit most of it on foot without breaking a sweat, though the full loop takes a couple of hours depending on your pace. The water's clear enough to spot fish, and in decent weather the reflections of the surrounding trees make it feel more remote than it actually is. It's the kind of place where you don't need a plan - bring a packed lunch, let the kids burn off energy chasing geese, and call it a morning.

Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those with dogs. The paths are well-maintained, rarely crowded, and you can link it with other routes in the area if you fancy extending things. Families appreciate the lack of gates and fees - you just turn up. The nearest town is Ripon, which means you're well-positioned for a broader tour of North Yorkshire.

If you're based at Sleningford Watermill or Riverside Meadows just down the road, The Lake makes a solid half-day activity without needing to travel far. It's not dramatic or particularly famous, but that's partly the point. Real value for time spent, and your tent or caravan isn't even three miles away.
