The Lake

The Lake near Cambridge is exactly what it sounds like - a proper body of water that's become the focal point for a stretch of countryside that otherwise might pass you by. You can walk the perimeter, spot waterfowl if you're patient enough, and on a decent day the light hits it in a way that makes you understand why people keep coming back.

It's the sort of place that appeals to anyone who wants a gentler outing without the crowds of the city centre. Families with young children will find it manageable - there's enough space to run about, and the walking is flat and straightforward. If you're into bird watching, bring binoculars and make an afternoon of it. Walkers using it as a waypoint between Cambridge and the surrounding villages tend to find it a useful spot to pause and take stock.

The real value here is in how it sits within the wider area. If you're based at Chittering Park just under two miles away, or pushing further to Fen End Farm or Roseberry Tourist Park, The Lake gives you a reason to get out of the caravan or tent without needing to drive. You could easily combine it with a walk towards Hempsall Farm's area for a proper morning or afternoon out.

Best visited when the weather's reasonable - there's little shelter if it turns - and early morning tends to be quieter if you prefer fewer people about. Allow an hour minimum if you're walking the full circuit, longer if you're stopping to watch the birds or just sitting for a bit.
