The Jane Austen Centre

You'd be forgiven for thinking Bath's Jane Austen Centre is just another literary shrine, but it's actually quite engaging even if you've never read a word of the author. The museum occupies a proper Georgian townhouse on Gay Street where Austen herself lived for a few years, and the volunteers (many dressed in period costume, which does feel a bit theme-park at first) genuinely know their stuff. You'll spend a good hour poking around displays about her life in Bath, her writing process, and the social world she moved in during the Regency era. Fair warning: it's text-heavy and quite small, so restless kids will hit the ceiling after forty minutes. History buffs and anyone doing a literary pilgrimage will find it worthwhile. The location matters too - it's bang in the middle of Bath's most walkable stretch, so you can easily combine it with the other grand Georgian squares and streets without feeling like you've gone miles out of your way. Bath Mill Lodge Retreat lies just two miles away, making the Centre a natural fit for a long weekend exploring the city's Georgian architecture and social history. Summer gets rammed with school groups, so aim for shoulder season if you can. Not free entry, but the price is reasonable enough. Plan ninety minutes rather than two hours unless you're a serious Austen scholar keen to read every panel.
