The River Avon winds through Sydney Gardens like it owns the place, and honestly, it does. This 19-acre green space sits right on Bath's doorstep - you can practically hear the city hum in the distance - yet it feels properly removed from the Georgian terraces and tour groups. It's a proper riverside walk, the kind where you actually notice things: ducks, willows leaning into the water, the occasional fisherman who hasn't moved in three hours.

You get two main things here. The gardens themselves are lovely for a stroll, with tree-lined paths and plenty of benches if you fancy sitting and doing nothing (which, let's be honest, is half the point). The towpath alongside the Avon is the real draw though - it's flat, easy walking, and connects you to longer riverside routes if you can't face turning back after 20 minutes.

Families with young kids will get a solid hour out of it, maybe 90 minutes if you pack a picnic and let them mess about by the water. Walkers treating this as a warm-up before tackling bigger territory will find it useful rather than thrilling. Birdwatchers and photographers might linger longer, especially early morning.

Parkwise, it slots nicely between Bath Mill Lodge Retreat and CAMPWELL FARM - both within easy driving distance - as a free morning activity before heading to proper attractions. No entry fee that I'm aware of, no gates, no drama. Just good, straightforward river walking on the western edge of Bath.
