The Isle of Wight Reptilarium

Walk in and you're immediately surrounded by glass tanks holding everything from bearded dragons to ball pythons. The Isle of Wight Reptilarium, just outside Freshwater, is a hands-on kind of place where kids actually get to handle some of the animals rather than just gawp from a distance. There's a decent collection of snakes, lizards, and other scaled creatures that would bore most adults for more than an hour, but if your children are into reptiles, you'll struggle to drag them away.

The space isn't huge, so don't expect a full day's outing. Budget ninety minutes maximum, maybe two hours if there's a feeding session on. It works well as a wet-weather backup when the Isle of Wight's weather turns moody - and honestly, that happens more often than you'd like. Staff are generally knowledgeable if you've got questions, and the interactive element (handling certain animals) does set it apart from your standard zoo.

If you're camping nearby - Heathfield Farm, Glamping The Wight Way, and The Bay Colwell are all within walking distance - this makes a decent rainy-day activity alongside beaches at Colwell Bay and walks around Freshwater. Bring cash for the gift shop if you've got kids expecting a souvenir. Check opening hours before you head over; island attractions can be seasonal or shift their times without much warning.
