Built in the 1100s, it's one of only a handful of round churches still standing in England - a design inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem itself. The Crusader knight Symon de Senlis funded it after returning from the Holy Land, and you can feel that medieval connection the moment you step inside.

What makes it work is the sheer oddness of the thing. The circular nave with its chunky Romanesque pillars feels almost theatrical compared to your standard parish church. The stonework is genuine - proper thick Norman construction - and the interior has been thoughtfully restored without looking sterile. You'll spot original architectural details alongside Victorian improvements that don't jar too badly.

History buffs will spend a solid hour here picking apart the details. Families with younger kids might manage thirty minutes before attention wanes - there's not much interactive about it, and it's frankly quite austere. The church halls next door occasionally host events, so worth checking before you visit. Admission details aren't widely published, but it's worth phoning ahead or catching the caretaker when you arrive.

Stay at Billing Aquadrome or Riverview Park - both within four miles - and you can make this a proper cultural detour between lake walks and leisure activities. It's the kind of place that makes you realise how much medieval England gets overlooked in favour of grander cathedral towns.
